Interview with Hannah Ly, Child Trauma Therapist

What kind of therapy services do you offer?

I offer play therapy for children, ages 4 and up, and their caregivers to work on anxiety, school issues, and transitions, like divorce or new members of the family.

For teenagers, I provide therapeutic services tailored to their unique challenges and needs. This includes support for emotional issues, social struggles, identity exploration, and navigating the complexities of adolescence. My approach is empathetic and non-judgmental, aiming to build trust and facilitate personal growth.

Additionally, I specialize in attachment-based therapy across all age groups. This focuses on developing and enhancing secure, healthy relationships between children, teens, and their caregivers. Through this approach, we address issues stemming from attachment disruptions and work towards fostering stronger bonds and resilience.

Alongside direct therapy services, I offer stand-alone parent coaching as well as parent coaching designed to complement child therapy. Recognizing that parents play a crucial role in a child's emotional and psychological development, these coaching sessions are tailored to empower parents with effective strategies and insights. Stand-alone parent coaching focuses on equipping caregivers with the tools they need to support their child's development independently, addressing common parenting challenges, and fostering a positive home environment.

Why did you choose to become a therapist in the Bay Area?

As a Bay Area native, it’s amazing to get to live and work here as an adult. I love the diversity of the Bay Area, and being able to help people from all over the Peninsula and South Bay.

My passion lies in supporting those in foster care and adoption. These journeys are unique, presenting both challenges and rewards. I'm committed to helping families, caregivers, and children navigate these complexities to foster strong, healthy relationships. I believe every child deserves a loving home, and I work to provide the support needed to heal from past traumas and build secure family bonds. My motivation in this field is fueled by the chance to help create and nurture healthy families. Through my work, I aim to empower children and their families to better understand and support each other, creating a nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.

How does your service help people with Trauma?

I approach my clients with a trauma-informed perspective, and use an attachment lens when addressing difficult issues that could be from attachment wounds or other losses. In addition, I am trained in Brain Spotting, a somatic trauma treatment, for children and adults.

In addition to my primary therapeutic approaches, I also specialize in play therapy. This modality is particularly effective with children, as it leverages the natural way children communicate and learn: through play.

What kind of people do you love working with?

I love working with children and their caregivers and seeing positive change within the home so children can thrive. I find deep fulfillment in collaborating with parents who are wholeheartedly committed to seeking the best for their children. It's incredibly rewarding to support these dedicated parents in understanding and meeting their children's unique needs.

What happens during a first appointment with you?

During the first session, I always meet with the caregivers of my new client, to go over history, issues coming up, and to discuss treatment goals. During the first session with a child client, I always have their parent/caregiver come into the therapy room with them, to ensure they feel safe and confident in the space. I let the child choose how long they want their caregiver in the therapy room with them, and honor their request.

What do you wish people knew about therapy services with you?

Play therapy is the way children can process their feelings and stressful experiences. Since play is a child’s language, I love being able to offer high quality, child-centered services to help children thrive.
